This year’s fabulous five-day tour from Monday to Friday takes us south of the Scottish Border to the stunning Lake District in the North West corner of England.
On Day One we will start from the south side of Edinburgh, we head towards Peebles on our way to the Sange Ling Monastery and from there to Penrith. We are based at the North Lakes Hotel for four nights where we plan to have at least one musical evening, some old car films, together with the traditional quiz and prize-giving. The hotel, well equipped and comfortable as well as having a swimming pool, will provide our base over the next four days as we explore Lakeland at its best, using most of the high road passes in the National Park.
On Day Two we traverse one of the highest passes, Hartside, at 580m, on our way to Middleton in Teesdale. We then head to Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Shap and a possible stop at Lowther Castle café, finishing back at Penrith for dinner.
On Day Three we will travel via Shap Summit on the old A6 through Kendal to the Lakeland Motor Museum if you wish, and thereafter up the Western side of Lake Windermere through Hawkshead and Coniston, the lake where Donald Campbell lost his life. We will then travel back via Ambleside along the road known as the Struggle to the Kirkstone Pass at 485m and on via Ullswater.
On Day Four the most challenging day, will require an early start with 3 three passes to climb and a complementary steam train ride on the Ravensglass and Eskdale Railway. We travel over the passes of Wynrose and Hardknott, both at 393m, to Dalgarth.
On our return we take the slightly easier route via Loweswater and the Whinlatter pass, 318m, back to Penrith or, if you are really bold, you can go back the way you came!
On Day Five the tour takes us via Keswick, Derwent Water, Borrowdale, Honister Pass (356m), Buttermere and Crummock water to Cockermouth and then to our finishing point for a buffet lunch at Carlisle Golf Club.
