We assembled at the Big Red Barn café near Biggar on the A721 on Sunday morning. The temperature and outlook judging by the sky was pretty poor – more November than September. So the hot bacon sandwiches and coffee was much needed; as was the warmth of the café and the warm welcome by the staff. (My apologies for noting the temperature, but us Cornish residents are just not used to cold weather!).
….Refreshed, the party started off on the 67 mile run using the excellent directions put together by Lorraine. The route took us through Peebles, Innerleithen, Heriot, Westruther, and finally entering Duns – the focus of our trip. Before attending the museum dedicated to local hero Jim Clark we had lunch at the Jim Clark Café and Bistro, an establishment run by some of Jim’s relatives. Again, we were warmly greeted and the pre-ordered food was of high quality. On exiting after lunch we found that the clouds had cleared and the sun started to shine.….
….Just a few yards from the café we entered the recently opened Jim Clark museum – a charitable trust. The museum has a good balance of information about Duns’ Grand Prix champion.…
Apart from documents and an impressive display of trophies (including some MG), there is a continuous video presentation with both racing footage but also interviews with some of those who knew Jim and were part of getting him started in the 1950s.
….There are a couple of Lotus cars on display, but also an interactive mock-up which, I presume, was intended for younger visitors. Whatever the intention, this did not stop some MGCC Caledonian members from jumping in the cockpit and trying their skill. Although we bemoan our membership age profile, many Caledonian members at least are ‘young at heart.’…..
….On the conclusion of our visit the weather was perfect for hoods down, sunglasses, and hats. In all a great day’s drive which included one of Scotland’s Grand Prix milestones.
….My thanks to Lorraine for hosting and lending me one of her car collection, also Tony, who with Lorraine, provided good conversation across a range of subjects.
