….With regret we have to announce the passing in July of our Honorary President and past Chairman, Ron Spinks. Ron, with his late wife Joan, served the Centre well for many years, taking over as Chairman in 2000 and serving in that capacity until 2006 when David Reid took over.
….Initially he and Joan ran two MGAs, one as an everyday road car and the other as a near concours contender. Later he acquired a PA which had been owned and raced at Brooklands by bandleader Bill Cotton and which Ron rebuilt from the chassis up to such a high standard that the car won 14 concours awards in one year! A TD entered the mix for a short time but later he moved onto modern TFs and his last MG was yet another MGA coupe.
….MGs were not his only hobby as he was also a sailor and a keen Morgan enthusiast, but it would be true to say that MGs and the MG Car Club were predominant for most of his life. ….He had his own style of running things, not to everyone’s agreement, but he got things done and held the Centre together in its early years. In recognition of this he was appointed our first Honorary President in 2008, a title which he valued and he took great delight in attending functions, with Joan, wearing his badge of office. ….His health declined in recent years and he passed away in hospital in July.
