It was with both excitement and trepidation that we approached the run up to annual borders Thirlstane Castle Show. Anticipated excitement at the prospect of being at one of Scotland’s largest and prestigious shows, trepidation arising from the horrendous weather forecasts in the run up to the show. Mr H, (the other half), was getting somewhat tetchy with the weather outlook and needed a bit of therapy and coaxing to cajole him into uncovering his beloved. However, much to everyone’s immense relief, the Gods were on our side, and miraculously with divine intervention, the weather held, both for driving to and from, and during the show.
…Thirlstane Castle is 35 minutes south of Edinburgh just off the A68 at Lauder. Having 100’s of acres of parklands, it hosts many prestigious outdoor events such as International Horse Trials, and of course the Vintage Motoring Extravaganza. With over 1000 entries, cars, bikes, trucks, military, autojumble, side stalls, craft tents, farmers market, etc: this show has something for everyone and is seriously large, sharing centre stage with Glamis; another venue successfully exhibited by Caledonian.
…The Caledonian Club, annually attend this fabulous Classic Car show at Thirlstane, with 2019 being no exception.. The usual ‘Old Guard’ stalwarts (you know who you are), were there on the Saturday, getting marquees erected and all equipment in place ready for us all to enjoy on the Sunday. Thank you. A huge range of splendid MG’s assembled, ranging from early MGTD’s right through the evolutionary spectrum right up to date. Flags were hoisted, information boards erected and secured, flowers pruned (yes) and everything was set for a lovely show.
…Apart from the usual award winning show of cars, a major feature, and envy of all other clubs, is the gastronomic delights that await our lucky members. Jan MacGillivray has been so instrumental in providing and establishing this trend, and on this occasion, it fell upon oor Nancy and helpers to satisfy the troops hunger. Talking about troops, Nancy could have fed a proverbial army! You name it, she had it, and then some. Thanks to all the ladies that supplied these goodies. This provided non stop grazing throughout the day, and, if that wasn’t enough, the BBQ lads, Mike, Marino, etc were doing their own version of Celebrity Masterchef. Deeeeelicious. Manys a belt has to be loosened a notch by the end of the day!
…Back to the cars. As is the procedure, an internal member draws the short straw and is empowered to pick their favorite cars from within the gathering. . This year that honour and task fell upon the shoulders of Adele Rand. Adele picked out some stunners and her list comprised in order
…Strangely enough, and uncharacteristically, no prizes for best stand this year.. Ah well, suppose they have to give it to someone else occasionally. However as far as we were concerned, it was the best stand, best cars, best catering, and best people, what more could you want. And yes, Mr H got his car back in the dry!, so all’s well.
Huge thanks to all that made this day possible and so enjoyable.
