This year we celebrated 25 years of the Caledonian Centre and 25 years on May 2/3 day tours…! The first tour was based in Peebles and we returned to that borders town this year, based at the excellent Cardrona Hotel.
Since most of our entrants are from over the border we decided to have two start locations, one on either side of the border and this proved to be an inspired decision as most of the 84 entrants started from Vallum Farm near Hexham with about 20 using the Radstone Hotel near Larkhall. And for the first time in many years we had a high percentage of pre 1955 cars entered!
The weather was coldish but dry and by lunchtime all the cars had met up in Kelso square for a lunch stop. It was an ideal location with many photographs being taken. We were joined by local MG dealer ‘Central Motors ‘ of Galashiels who brought a 3 and a new GS to show.
After a shortish drive the cars arrived at the Cardrona with the drivers and passengers looking forward to an excellent buffet meal and a charity raffle.
Sunday morning early doors the cars and crews headed out into the gorgeous borders countryside including the stunning road up past Megget Dam and then meeting up for lunch at the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel then returning to Cardona for our Anniversary dinner and a 1930s night. The room had been redecorated in anniversary style , there was a 5 piece jazz band and almost every one of the entrants came dressed to kill in 1930s gear.
It was a great night and a magnificent way to celebrate 25 years of the Centre. Various awards were made to the best dressed couples etc and a new award from Dughall Leask for ‘Endeavour’ by the driver of a pre-1955 car went to Colin McLachlan for his efforts in the MGCC MMM Register Car of the Year Competition. The Cooper bowl was awarded to Douglas Arthur for his organising of two Orkney trips and there was even a prize for the greatest combination of car age, driver’s age and passenger’s age!
Monday saw us heading to Manderston House near Duns for a final lunch and for some a tour of the historic house. And that was it.. THE END!. Weather was good and the scenery great, no major mechanical mishaps , Cardrona staff were excellent… Overall a very enjoyable event!
